There's a truism in city planning and urban politics that "people vote with their feet." High-tax cities and regions rarely do well in the long run. Low tax cities attract better talent, more companies, etc. The same is true for countries.
The exodus of talent, skilled labour, and technical expertise out of Canada and into the United States in the last decade has gone largely underreported, but its long-term consequences cannot be underestimated. The numbers aren't sustainable.
Canada will have no choice but to officially join the Union in the future because Canadians have already de facto made the choice with their feet.
If it's a choice between joining the USA or the EU, I'd encourage our politicians to open a map before making any more public commitments.

It is easier for Israel to kill off the Palestinians in Gaza than to lock them up indefinitely. And the same is true for us.
