China decided to build, house, feed, and educate its young generation. Its political class lifted millions out of poverty. They tried things like the one child policy. Granted it wasn't the best idea, but at least the Chinese leadership didn't just sit on their ass. They got busy.
They experimented and planned. They saw potential problems and looked for solutions. Population, food, housing, energy, industry, the economy, wherever they saw an urgent issue they decided to tackle it.
India's political elite told themselves why bother with all that hard work when you can just export the problem to the West? Why build? Why educate? Why publicly invest in the economy? Why have a five or ten year plan? Why build functioning and clean cities to accommodate your growing populations?
They took the easy road of governance and now we're here.
Their problem is now our problem.
I can't even go comfortably for a walk these days around the city without fear of being run over by an Indian driver. In just this year alone I've had close calls three times just walking on the sidewalk. I almost got run over again last night after an evening walk. I looked at the driver and it was a smiling Indian guy.
Respect for pedestrians was obviously not taught in India. It's understandable. There's too many people there to respect the rules of the road. Drivers take charge. And pedestrians there adjusted long ago.
But once you leave India you have to leave that mindset behind.
The Canadian government has done a poor job re-educating new Indian immigrants about the rules of the road.
These drivers must be taught Canada is not a lawless place. Pedestrians have the right of way.
