1. The final should have been a rematch of the 2024 Euros between Spain and England. That would have been a way more entertaining duel. We were robbed.
Argentina frauded their way to the final and it finally showed. They got exposed. They had zero shots on target in 120 minutes. That's a damning stat. Both Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia managed to get 1 shot on target in their games against Spain.
Argentina were never worthy champs to begin with. It's comforting to know a true champion holds the World Cup trophy now.
2. Respect to all the Asian, African, and South American teams, but the level of football they bring to the table is not deserving of our collective attention. The 2028 Euros will be a better reflection of football than anything we saw at this tournament.
The World Cup has lost its prestige. 48 teams is 24 too many. I think going forward the Euros will be more indicative of which team is the best in the world.
There's talks of the World Cup expanding to 64 teams so it will become even more of a joke and a gimmick. It's still the most beautiful trophy in the world so it'll still have that going for it.
3. FIFA made bank, but the product suffered for it. There were too many stoppages. Football is supposed to be hypnotic. All I remember are the commercials. This will not be a memorable World Cup because of all the extracurricular shenanigans involved.
I don't want to be completely negative. There were also great moments and great goals. The superstars showed up. We got some fantastic games. Haaland's goals against Brazil and England's performance against Mexico stand out. But on the whole there was not enough drama.
4. Spain is just beginning its dominance. I don't like the way they play. I don't enjoy their games. I like teams that rely on traditional strikers like Norway with Haaland. But domination is domination. They'll be hard to beat in 2028 and 2030.
