Some Thoughts On Recent Developments In The Middle East.
A leopard cannot change its spots. The head choppers and mustache trimmers who occupy Damascus are what they are: psychopaths and religious nutjobs. They have no business being in high office.
No amount of European aid, Turkish backing, Saudi and Qatari finance, and American words can turn a band of violent terrorists into a legitimate governing body. It is mission impossible.
Who elected the current "leader" of Syria? No one. The al-Qaeda regime was foisted on the peoples of Syria at the point of a gun, and that strategy can work in a land where the people are not sufficiently armed, like in Iran or Afghanistan, but not in Syria. After a decade of war the people are well armed, especially the minorities. Only this fact has kept the wolves at bay.
The American envoy is trying his best to disarm the Kurds, sideline the Alawites and the Druze, and make Syria a pacified region for Turkey, but he will not succeed because it's an existential matter for these peoples. They will not submit to Sharia Law willingly.
American and European leaders can believe all they want that al Qaeda is reformed because they put on suits and ties but the people on the ground are not fooled.
The peoples of Syria don't want their country to become the next Iran or Afghanistan, and suffer under the rule of religious extremists, and nor should they.
Why don't the Turks and Gulf Arabs embrace Al-Qaeda's ideological tenets in their countries since they are so enaromed with them in Syria? Why not the French and British? Let them get a taste of Sharia Law since they think it's fine for Syria.
Sunni Wahhabism and orthodox Islam, nurtured by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Israel, England, America, and Turkey, are not viable governing models in ethnically diverse and religiously mixed societies. ISIS could ideologically succeed in Arabia, Pakistan, and even in Turkey, but not in the Levant, or Mesopotamia.
This Syria disaster has unfolded because there isn't the right power balance in West Asia. I've written before that war in the Middle East must be a two way street if an equilibrium is to eventually emerge.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar must feel real pain for exporting violent ideologies and arming sectarian militias in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria. They have not faced any consequences for their destructive policies so they haven't learned to stop. They have lived in luxury while exporting terror, hate and ignorance. If that doesn't end then instability and terrorism in the region will continue.
As for the Israel factor in Syria. Israel will do whatever is best for it. Its predictable behaviour is admirable. Israeli leaders said they would attack Damascus if it attacked the Druze and they backed up their words.
But, it shouldn't be forgotten that it was Israel who armed, sheltered and provided medical aid to al Qaeda and other Sunni Jihadist groups in Syria for over a decade. So they're just destroying the monster they helped unleash along with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, England, France, and America.
Should we thank it for that? Hell no.
