The war in Ukraine and its causes has not received the serious attention it deserves in the media.
There is an absence of intellectual, historical, and political understanding of Russian behavior. As a result, the wildest fantasies and lies have been invented to present Russia as an evil aggressor.
But geopolitics is more complicated than good vs evil fairy tales. The scriptwriters in Washington and Kiev can dream up all the stories they want, the only story that matters is the one the victor tells.
Falsehoods may reign supreme in the information space, Ukraine can run away with that victory, but wars are won on the battlefield. And so far Putin is winning there. He practically has been gifted territory by the idiots in Washington and Kiev.
It didn't have to be this way. If Ukraine and the United States were led by smarter people Putin wouldn't have even dreamed of invading Ukraine.
Putin was not on the march. He is not a conqueror. He had to be convinced to intervene in Syria against ISIS a decade ago. He is a cautious man. Russia is still licking its wounds after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
But the maniacs who control U.S. foreign policy just couldn't sit still. They had to make trouble and force Putin to act.
They didn't just want Russia out of the picture, but humiliated.
Denying Russian hegemony in the former Soviet space, especially Ukraine, the Caucasus and Central Asian countries, has been a pillar of U.S. policy towards Russia since the end of the Cold War. The neocon Robert Kagan, husband of Victoria Nuland, one of the architects of the neo-Nazi takeover of Ukraine in 2014, outlined this policy nine years ago.
That policy isn't working out too well these days.

From, "McCarthyism re-emerging stronger than ever in Ukraine policy debates" By Ted Galen Carpenter, Responsible Statecraft, April 11, 2022:
"A troubling pattern has developed over the decades in which foreign policy hawks smear their opponents and thereby seek to foreclose discussion of questionable U.S. policy initiatives."
