The day after last month's deadly suicide attack on a church outside Syria's capital, hundreds of Christians marched in Damascus chanting against foreign fighters and calling for them to leave the country.
The June 22 attack on the Mar Elias church, killing at least 25 people and wounding dozens, was the latest alarm for religious minorities who say they have suffered one blow after another since President Bashar Assad was removed from power in December.
Muslim militant groups led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which is headed by Syria’s interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa, now control much of the country. While the new government has condemned attacks on minorities, many accuse it of looking the other way or being unable to control the armed groups it is trying to absorb.
Among the groups are thousands of foreign fighters, who often hold a more extreme Islamic ideology than many of their Syrian counterparts. In a highly unusual move, al-Sharaa early on promoted a half-dozen foreign fighters to ranks as high as brigadier general.

Israel has much greater enmity towards Christianity than Islam. Its bombing of churches in Palestine is a regular occurrence. And through its covert agents in ISIS and other Islamic terrorist groups operating in Syria it is also bombing churches there.
It has one aim with these attacks: expel Christians from the Middle East.
Israel fears Christianity more than Islam. The latter has a far weaker historical claim on the Holy Land. It is the junior religion, and despite all its boasting, its religious literature does not hold up to critical scrutiny.
Every historically literate person knows the Jews and Christians have the higher claim to Jerusalem.
And as Jay Smith and others have pointed out, the original Arab conquerors of the Holy Land and the Levant conquered under the flag and symbols of Christianity, not a new religion called Islam. They subsequently created a prophet out of whole cloth and formulated a holy scripture in the wake of their territorial conquests to religiously define their new empire as a separate entity from Byzantium, their biggest enemy.
The critical role Syria has played in the spread of both Christianity and Islam cannot be underestimated. It is a crown jewel of both faiths.
The fact that a Mossad, CIA and MI6 implant is currently ruling Damascus is a source of real and deep shame.
Through him, these demons from hell have elevated and empowered savages from the steppes of Central Asia, restored the Ottomans' tyrannical grip, and strengthed Israel's position in the Levant.
Christians, Muslims, and minorities have suffered and will continue to suffer under his illegitimate rule.
