The Legacy of Stan Rogers

A nation is its poets and bards. They are the reservoir of cultural memory, social history, and national identity. That was certainly true once. I don't know about now. Maybe it still is. But if they're not taught in schools, remembered in mass media, preserved in libraries, they will be forgotten and the country, too.

Wikipedia:

Stanley Allison Rogers (November 29, 1949 – June 2, 1983) was a Canadian folk musician and songwriter.

Rogers was noted for his traditional-sounding songs which were frequently inspired by Canadian history and the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces and, later, the farms of the Canadian prairies and Great Lakes. Rogers died in a fire aboard Air Canada Flight 797 on the ground at the Greater Cincinnati Airport at the age of 33.

An excerpt from, "Legendary folk artist Stan Rogers takes the stage on new stamp" Canada Post, July 21, 2021:

When Stan Rogers took the stage, guitar in hand, his presence was electric. Standing six foot four, with a deep, rumbling voice that rose and fell like waves on a Nova Scotia shore, he poured his heart and soul into every word he sang. Poetry set to music, his ballads laid bare the lives of the sailors, ranchers, miners and others whose stories had captured his imagination.

“Stan said things about people that were true. He loved talking and listening to people because he was interested in what they did and wanted to tell their story,” says his widow, Ariel Rogers. “He had an incredible gift for taking that life experience and turning it almost like a prism, so you saw the essence of the person rather than just a reflection.”

An hour of the folksinger Stan Rogers. He died as a result of a disastrous fire on an airplane in 1983. 2016 is the 40th anniversary of Stan’s first album, Fogarty’s Cove, and Rewind uses that as an excuse to hear from about this amazing musician.
