"I think if we are to save this transition from deteriorating into a civil war then everybody needs to consciously agree to talk to each other and to sort of not head where this seems to be heading, which is an escalating cycle of violence. The Muslim Brotherhood has its back to the wall and therefore they are not going. They don't see what it is that they could possibly lose after this has happened. And therefore it is incumbent on the others, the liberal opponents, to try and reach out to them to make sure that this transition works because what happened today is a serious threat to its possibility." - Mervat Hatem, professor at Howard University.
