He was declared president following the 2013 Egyptian coup d'état, precipitated by mass protests. The military and several secular and religious figures (including Grand Imam of al-Azhar Dr Ahmed el-Tayeb, Coptic Pope Tawadros II, and Mohamed ElBaradei) announced that President Mohamed Morsi had been removed from office and Mansour appointed interim President until an election could take place."
