In a confrontation between non-violent protesters and violent oppressors, the later will always win. This truth cannot be denied. I'm all for peaceful protests, but let's not fool ourselves by thinking that going into war with bare feet and bare hands will produce victory for freedom all the time. Non-violent tactics can produce change in societies that are democratic, and can be used effectively against governments that rely on the popular will for its existence. But non-violent protests can't work in all countries, like in North Korea for example, or in Iran, where huge factions support the regime - and who don't mind the deaths of a few protesters at the hands of government authorities every now and then. Sometimes, governments must be overthrown violently, which means war. And a war in which one side is fighting with bare hands is not a war but slaughter. Freedom is won by blood, and by struggle. That is just the way it is. As Thomas Jefferson said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." The people of Bahrain, and the people of other nations in the Middle East are coming face to face with this truth.
