America's government is broken. Even CNN admits that. The world's leading democracy has long been in peril. In the past thirty years the nation's oligarchy has pillaged the country's wealth, while the middle class disappeared, and a new underclass arose. Commentators from across the political spectrum warn of the end of America. Two years ago, author Naomi Wolf wrote a book called "The End of America", which illuminated to Americans the present conditions that could lead to America's demise.
Ever since the death of JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King Jr. the country's political leaders have gotten exponentially worse. The Congress itself is a rotten corpse. The Constitution has been splintered into a thousand pieces. And Washington D.C has failed to recognize the opinion of the people on the two bankrupting wars in the Middle East, financial reform, health care reform, electoral reform, and every other important issue facing the country. Also, let's not forget that people are painfully aware how they were neo-conned in the lead up to the Iraq War. And, of course, the cover-up of 9/11 is slowly gaining mainstream attention, which will undoubtedly ignite the whole nation with anger.
As a result of being duped, good men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan have died for nothing. Americans had high hopes for the current president, but he too failed to live up to expectations, and appears to be the complete opposite of what he said he was. Obama, like Bush, fooled the country. Or, to put it more accurately, the American people wanted to be fooled again.
Which brings us to today. Where do you stand on the health of the country, and its immediate future? Are you going to accept deteriorating conditions simply because our fake leaders say so?
William Cormier asks in his article How Do We Open A Public Dialogue That Discusses How To Save Our Republic From Disaster?
What has happened to our nation? Why have the very corporations that we built with our own blood, sweat and tears turned against the very people that made them successful?Well, it seems Mrs. Karen Quinn-Tostado has an answer as to how we can reverse this situation. The time for peaceful non-compliance has come. Mrs. Quinn-Tostado, the founder of TaxFree15, suggests a tax holiday next month and the many months to come, resembling the tax strikes of the Revolutionary era. She asks what does it mean to be a patriot? Is a patriot a person who follows orders, or a person who asks questions? Ask yourself that question, and contemplate your role in the universe. Are you here to just work, sleep, and eat, or make this world a better place for your children and the next generation? Forget the legacy of Bush and Obama, what do you want your legacy to be? Twenty years from now will you be content with yourself if you keep on the same track that you are on right now? What you decide matters because a consciousness revolution can't take place unless every person is a part of it.
Are you just going to hang your head and pretend that a crisis doesn't exist? Liberty, truth, justice, are all at stake, and we can all do something to make change possible. This is a not the time to sit back and watch millions of citizens undergo humiliating procedures at airports. Or watch innocent and nonthreatening "drug offenders" be hauled off into private prisons for life. Or watch any other offense to the human heart and do nothing.
As a kid I was horrified by African slavery, and wondered how humanity can be so cruel. I told myself that if I were alive during that era I would've done everything in my power to change American society, but I then realized that I don't need a time machine to do that because a similar system of tyranny has cropped up in my lifetime, which I can help to change. And so can you.
We must make the world's governments, banks, and corporations respect every human being as a unique individual. No underclass, and no overlords. Everybody deserves life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As Henry David Thoreau said in his essay Civil Disobedience:
There will never be a really free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly.Thoreau's challenge of personal responsibility is before every American today. And Americans can meet that challenge by refusing to pay their taxes to a criminal and unresponsive federal government in Washington, which continues to trample every man's liberty, and lay waste the blood, and treasure of the country. In other words, raging is not enough, we must now stop the war machine and the money-printing machine, or else the country will collapse, and take the dream of liberty along to its death.
